Dana Point recently announced an anti-theft campaign called Hide It, Lock It, or Lose It. It may not be common knowledge, but theft of personal property, often from unlocked cars, is the most common crime in Dana Point. I’m sure that other nearby cities in Orange County have similar statistics.
According to the program’s supporters, crime rates in Dana Point have decreased, partially as a result of the program:
In addition, crime rates have dropped, significantly! Since September of last year, vehicle related thefts have dropped from 77% of total property crime to 41%, thefts from unlocked vehicle thefts have dropped from 69% to 35%, and overall property crime has dropped from 61% to 55%. This is largely attributed to the success of this program as well as the response and progression of this community as a whole.
Bottom line: security begins with awareness, and this campaign is great!
